The first Lidl stores were opened in 1973, and by the 1980's, Lidl was a household name in Germany. During the 1990's, Lidl started branching outside of Germany, and today, they can be found all across Europe. In fact, their extensive network of stores is unrivalled in the discount sector.
In 1994, Lidl opened the first store in the UK, and just two decades later, expanded to have over 600 stores thanks to the dedication of our people and a simple vision that inspires us all – high quality at low prices.
Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, (pronounced: Leedle) formerly Schwarz Unternehmens Treuhand KG, is a German global discount supermarket chain, based in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe. It belongs to the holding company Schwarz Gruppe, which also owns the store chains Handelshof and hypermarket Kaufland.
Lidl is the chief competitor of the similar German discount chain Aldi. LIDL USA has set up its US headquarters in Arlington, VA and has its sights set on an aggressive construction schedule, starting with the East Coast.
- 1970's – The first Lidl store opened in Germany 1973, employing three people and stocking around 500 product lines. By 1979, 6 more opened, taking the total to 30 stores.
- 1980's – Lidl opened 300 stores across Germany. On average, each store employed seven people and stocked around 900 product lines.
- 1990's – Lidl began opening stores outside of Germany, starting in France, and in 1994, they opened their first UK store.
- Today – Lidl has expanded to offer a network of 600+ UK stores and is now entering the US market.
